An auger, a chain knocker and a jetter are three different tools.
Which one your drain needs depends on what is in the line. Being sold the wrong one is how a drain gets cleared on Monday and blocks again on Friday.
Auger or cable
The one most calls need
1 What it isA flexible steel cable with a head on the end, driven down the line by a machine or turned by hand.2 What it is forSoft stoppages and obstructions: hair, paper, a toy, a grease plug that has not hardened.3 The limitIt punches through the blockage. It does not clean the pipe wall, so if the line is coated it will close up again.
Chain knocker
For scale inside the pipe
1 What it isA spinning head with chains on it, run down the line on a cable.2 What it is forScraping hardened build-up and scale off the inside of a pipe, especially older cast iron that has narrowed over decades.3 The limitIt is aggressive. It belongs in a pipe that can take it, which is why we look at the line first.

1 What it isA hose with a nozzle that fires water backwards at high pressure, pulling itself up the line and washing it as it goes.2 What it is forGrease, sludge and recurring blockages.
